Introduction

This article describes the recent changes in continence services throughout the UK. It also examines the extent of the problem, identifies those at risk and explains how to encourage the patient/client to seek help early on in their symptoms. It aims to provide guidance on how to make a good nursing assessment, initiate a treatment programme, when to refer and, where appropriate, how to offer effective management. At the end of this article you should be able to:

Understand the size of the problem and how the health service is preparing to deal with incontinence

Identify the causes and symptoms of each type of incontinence

Understand the components of a good nursing assessment

Initiate appropriate treatment, care planning
