Jenny Buchan Teacher Co-ordinator for Children with Cancer and Leukaemia, Birmingham Chidren’s Hospital

Jenny Buchan is a ward-based teacher on a paediatric oncology unit. She describes her role and the importance of a continuing education for children with a malignant disease

Cancer, leukaemia, malignant disease are all words that strike fear in the minds of most adults. Teachers are no exception and many become very worried at the thought of teaching a child with ‘cancer’ or ‘leukaemia’ or ‘a malignant disease’. These diagnoses also cause many people to question the worth of a continuing education.
