Health promotion: the role of the children’s nurse

Lisa Whiting Senior Lecturer, Child Health, University of Hertfordshire

Lisa whiting asks whether the role of the children’s nurse should diversify to focus more on health than sickness

Health promotion’ is a term that has almost become a buzz phrase - it is certainly a concept which has been considered and analysed by a number of nurses in a range of journals. However, much of this literature has been written by authors who are not specifically concerned with the health of children. As a consequence, there is a potential danger that discussion about the role of nurses in health promotion will be made without input from children’s nurses themselves. In view of this, perhaps it warrants further consideration from our branch of the profession.
