This article highlights the need for mental health nurses to take a proactive role in the identification and prevention of metabolic syndrome to improve quality of life for patients with schizophrenia. A range of strategies to help mental health nurses address some of the physical health problems associated with metabolic syndrome in individuals with schizophrenia is outlined.
