One of the pioneers of graduate nurse education in the UK, Dr Elaine Wilkie died on December 14. Born in Edinburgh 83 years ago, Dr Wilkie trained as a nurse and midwife at Kings College Hospital, London. Later, as a health visitor, she obtained a degree in psychology from Birkbeck College and, in retirement, a PhD from Edinburgh University. For 12 years, Wilkie was chief professional adviser to the Council for Training of Health Visitors.
