Aim and intended learning outcomes The aim of this article is to familiarise the reader with ethical theories and principles in order to make decisions about practice more systematic and informed. After reading this article, the nurse should:

Be familiar with basic ethical principles

Be able to discuss specific aspects of the various principles

Be aware when principles need to be applied and when they should be set aside.
