Minor injury care in the community

Jones Gary A&E Nurse Manager, Basildon and Thurrock Health Authority when this article was written

This article describes the setting up and running of a nurse-led, community-based, minor injuries unit. Initially meeting with resistance from the local health authority, a six month pilot study showed that the clinic could operate effectively to the benefit of the community. The process of setting up the clinic and the type of service it provides are described

In the summer of 1990, the Basildon and Thurrock Health Authority took the decision to centralise acute services on one hospital site. This was achieved by the end of July 1991. Prior to centralisation, the authority provided acute services on two hospital sites, one in the district of Basildon, the other at Orsett Hospital in the borough of Thurrock.
