Intravenous infusion pumps

Annie Leggett Clinical Nurse Specialist (Intravenous Therapy), The Royal Marsden Hospital, London

Annie Leggett, in the first of a short series of articles, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of intravenous infusion pumps

Infusion devices are being used increasingly to deliver intravenous fluids and medications in order to achieve a desired therapeutic response. These devices can be divided, initially, into two main categories: the pump infusion device and the gravity infusion device. Both groups are represented in a variety of different models, ranging from the basic to advanced. The price range will reflect the type of device chosen. Where possible, standardising infusion devices within areas or throughout the hospital is essential.
