Hospitals should pay nurses and other staff time and a half to work voluntary extra shifts to help clear the NHS backlog, says the new Labour government. The aim is to offer 40,000 more appointments for NHS patients in England every week. But with many nurses already working overtime – often without extra pay – some question whether staff will be able or willing to volunteer for extra work.
