Transfers to nursing homes

Michael Reardon Senior Registrar in Geriatrics, Department of Geriatrics, St George’s Hospital, London

Does the availability of nursing homes influence the number of patients transferred there from hospital care? Michael Reardon offers a look at patient discharges from a district general hospital in an area where there is a high prevalence of private nursing homes

Between 1983 and 1993, the number of residents over 65 years of age in private, and voluntary homes, rose by 150 per cent (1), accompanied by closure of long-term NHS beds.
