All you need to know about earwax removal

Yvonne Covell Journalist

How can nurses help patients with problematic earwax build up that, if untreated, could lead to hearing loss?

Earwax is a natural substance that helps protect ears from dirt and germs, but too much wax can lead to symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus, itchiness and vertigo. Wax build up is more common in older people, those who wear hearing aids and those with ear conditions. Each year around 2.3 million people in the UK need their earwax removed by a professional. Many patients are now being told by their GP that they will have to pay privately for earwax removal, which typically costs between £50 and £100.
