Thyroid hormones have significant effects on the cardiovascular system. In general, high levels of thyroid hormones, or hyperthyroidism, are associated with an increased risk of altered heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation. Reduced levels of thyroid hormone found in hypothyroidism may cause atherosclerosis.
