Communication is crucial in helping people manage long-term conditions

Lisa Berry @RCNi_Lisa Editor, Nursing Older People

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common long-term respiratory conditions in older people globally, yet is still marked by an annual worldwide awareness-raising day – this year on 20 November. This lack of public awareness and the subsequent burden of the disease may be partly explained by the gradual onset of the disease. People with COPD tend to adapt to life with persistent breathlessness and, sadly, some believe it is simply part of getting older.
