There is a wealth of debate as to what constitutes an analogy, or a metaphor: are they the same or are they different? (Carlson 2001, Chen 2003, MacCormac 1990). But ultimately, does it really matter what term is used, as long as it provokes an individual to reflect? After all, as Ramsden (1992) notes, people’s perceptions of tasks, motivation and interest are intrinsically linked to their own experiences.
