the Tuesday Group: promoting mental health

Though people with learning disabilities are particularly prone to developing mental health problems, specific health promotion packages for this group are rare. Steve Hardy, Virginia Essam and Peter Woodward describe how the Tuesday Group in south London was set up to plug this gap

People with learning disabilities are vulnerable to developing mental health problems; this is due to an interaction of biological, psychological and social factors. Recent studies have shown that around one adult in five with a learning disability has a mental health problem (Taylor et al 2004), the rate is around four in ten among children with learning disabilities (Emerson 2003), and both rates are higher than those without learning disabilities.
