Creating a Safe Space

Creating a Safe Space is a training pack aimed at people working with lesbian, gay and bisexual clients (LGBs) in mental health services. It aims to increase staff awareness of the needs of LGBs, to decrease prejudiced attitudes and false assumptions and to improve practice. The training materials are equally relevant to those working in learning disability services. This is because all expressions of sexuality, including homosexuality, by men and women with learning disabilities have tended to be pathologised over the years (Thompson et al 2001, Wheeler 2001). Moreover, many of the issues faced by mental health service users, such as stigmatisation, are also encountered by women and men with learning disabilities.
