Knee injuries

Nicola Adams Emergency nurse practitioner, St Mary’s A&E department, London

NICOLA ADAMS describes the assessment and management of knee injuries, and how they should be treated

The knee joint is the largest and most complicated joint in the body (Snell 2000). It is also a major weight bearing joint that constantly undergoes stress as it absorbs the impact of full body weight during physical activity. It depends on ligaments and muscles for power and stability (Wardrobe and English 1998).
