More than 20 years ago, I co-wrote an article for Emergency Nurse on stabbing injuries (Scott and MacKenzie 1997). Back then we noted that, physiologically, stab wounds are analogous to an iceberg as the often small laceration or puncture wound may be hiding major organ or vessel trauma below.
