Rachel O’Mahony and Susan Oliver outline the treatment options recommended for patients presenting with osteoarthritis in primary care

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and is one of the major causes of pain and disability worldwide. In the UK alone, up to 8.5 million people suffer from joint pain that can be attributed to OA (Arthritis Care 2004) and over five million people have radiographic evidence of hand, hip or knee OA (Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance 2004, Arthritis Research Campaign 2002).
