This article aims to update nurses on cancer pain incidence, causes, assessment and management approaches. Cancer patients can be nursed in a variety of settings: in acute hospitals and in the community either at home, in nursing homes or hospices. An understanding of cancer pain and the different approaches to assessment and management will help ensure that nurses in different clinical settings are able to support patients and their families when dealing with the symptoms of cancer-related pain.
