Supplementary prescribing and clinical management plans

Molly Courtenay Reader, Prescribing and Medicines Management, Reading University, and RCN Prescribing Adviser

Molly Courtenay’s presentation to the Primary Care 2004 conference in Birmingham examined the reality of supplementary prescribing, as she reports here

The introduction of a new form of prescribing for professions allied to medicine was suggested in 1999 (Department of Health (DoH) 1999). It was proposed that this new form of prescribing, ‘dependent’ prescribing, would take place after a diagnosis had been made by a doctor and a Clinical Management Plan (CMP) drawn up for the patient. The term ‘dependent’ prescribing has since been superseded by ‘supplementary prescribing’.
