Sarah Robinson and the research team at King’s College introduce a longitudinal research study with far-reaching implications for children’s nursing

Career pathways for children’s nurses are expanding with the increase in number of community paediatric nursing teams (Whiting 1997) and the development of specialist aspects of paediatric nursing (Willis 1995). Information about the careers pursued by child branch diplomates from qualification onwards, and the factors which influence their career decisions, is being provided by a Department of Health funded project, based at the Nursing Research Unit, King’s College London. Nurses’ careers are being documented in order to identify factors that may affect retention. This article provides details of the project and the policy issues it addresses.
