How to… prepare an abstract

The abstract by Caroline Spencer, which won the 1999 RiCH award at the International Paediatric Nursing Conference in Bournemouth this year, is introduced by Anne Casey

Every nurse has a professional duty to disseminate good practice and research findings through writing for publication, and by presenting papers and posters at conferences. Recent articles in this journal gave advice on how to set about these activities (Jackson and Sheldon 1998a, 1998b, Sheldon and Jackson 1998). Below is an example of an abstract for a conference paper which illustrates the key principles of abstract preparation. The abstract should:

give a succinct, but complete, overview of the whole presentation;

reflect at least one theme of the conference;

be written in an academic, but jargon-free, style.
