Hypnosis in the management of eczema in children

Fiona Mantle Health Visitor, Surrey

The potential for hypnosis to enhance existing treatment is undervalued, as Fiona Mantle explains in this review of its use

Although it can be difficult to provide an accurate estimate of the incidence of atopic eczema in children, recent studies indicate a frequency of between five and 10 per cent (Williams 1995). In 90 per cent of cases, eczema starts before the age of five years and often within the first three months of age (Yates et al 1983). There is evidence that the incidence of the condition is increasing which does suggest that there might be an environmental as well as a genetic element to the condition (Williams 1995).
