Practice development: restoring hope

Tina Wills Senior Fellow, RCN Gerontological Nursing Programme

Most nurses wish to improve their practice and develop their knowledge and expertise for the benefit of the older people they support. However, this can sometimes seem an uphill struggle against the realities of staffing shortages and skill mix changes that do not match the complex health care needs of older people (Truman 2000, RCN 1999). In an ever-changing health climate there is a constant need to develop practice which can be frustrating for nurses as they may feel that they fall short of meeting their desired standards of care, their own development and learning needs, and the care needs of older people.
