Ian Hassell An Emergency Department Assistant, Royal United Hospital, Bath

Improving emergency department nurse productivity

Bath’s Royal United Hospital’s Emergency Department has adopted a novel approach to improving the productivity of its nursing teams - by getting some of the non-nursing elements of the job done by others, allowing nurses to spend a higher proportion of their time using their professional skills. The obvious questions to ask are:

• How did they do that?

• Who does the jobs the nurses used to do?

• And what are the jobs?
