Mental health act powers

Dear Editor,

In connection with Daniel Allen’s report on the break up of the Mental Health Alliance (MHP 10,10), it would be interesting to know how worried most service users are as to whether the power to renew their detention is exercised by a psychiatrist, a psychologist or a nurse. As someone who has been sectioned regularly over the past 40 years, I welcome multidisciplinary approaches to assessment and care. But I am not clear how closely these are linked to who has the power to detain and have seen no evidence to suggest that a capacity to misapply the Mental Health Act is exclusive to any mental health profession.
