Malignant pleural mesothelioma: the current picture

Matthew Johnson Deputy Head of Nursing, Oncology, Guy’s Hospital, London
Sally Moore RGN Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, Department of Palliative Medicine, Guy’s Hospital, London

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer, the incidence of which is rising. Asbestos is a major risk factor for the cancer, although the disease has been reported in individuals without known asbestos exposure. Prognosis is generally poor and palliation is frequently the only option, although clinical trials are now assessing the value of surgery and chemotherapy. Nursing management of symptoms and providing information options available is key to patient care.
