Greater access to the internet has resulted in more people searching online for health information and the development of online-based patient support services. This article critically evaluates the role of Prostate Cancer UK’s online Live chat service as a mechanism to deliver support to those seeking health information. It compares virtual support and information to the more traditional method of communicating by telephone and explores whether online live chat provides a solution-focused platform or if it is a barrier to those seeking health information. The priorities for the specialist nurses at Prostate Cancer UK in providing effective support and information through online live chat are also examined.
