Developing evidence-based standards for breast prosthesis fitting services

Karen Scanlon Research and evaluation manager, Breast Cancer Care, London
Jane Goddard Prosthesis fitting project manager, Breast Cancer Care, London

A significant proportion of the 41,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK will have a mastectomy or lumpectomy and will require the use of external breast prostheses. Despite the important role that breast prosthesis fitting services play, there are limited guidelines or protocols for how these services should be delivered to women following surgery. This article presents the first UK study to investigate peoples’ experiences of attending different types of breast prosthesis fitting services and offers standards of care for such services.
