Why you should read this article:
  • To recognise that assessing the competence of nurses delivering systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) is essential to ensure high-quality patient care

  • To learn about the development of a digital SACT competency passport that aims to improve learning experience and accessibility for users

  • To contribute towards revalidation as part of your 35 hours of CPD (UK readers)

  • To contribute towards your professional development and local registration renewal requirements (non-UK readers)

Robust competency assessment of systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) nurses ensures high-quality care is delivered to patients. The UK Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) developed the SACT competency passport to support training and assessment of SACT nurses. Used throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland, the passport benefits staff, patients and employers. Limitations in terms of its accessibility and interactivity prompted UKONS to commission the creation of a digital version in the form of an app.

This article introduces the app and discusses the features aiding the passport’s use. It also explains how to complete and mark the passport, how to assess others with it and how to provide feedback. Finally, the authors provide information about the implementation of the app and future developments.
