According to NHS England, the NHS spends around £570 million a year on prescriptions for medicines that can be purchased over the counter (OTC). It has therefore launched a joint consultation with NHS Clinical Commissioners on commissioning guidance for conditions for which OTC items should not be prescribed routinely in primary care.
