Bringing a fundamental but little known issue to the attention of nurses, our judges said, is a piece of detective work to be proud of. Researching the problem of contact dermatitis, wound care specialist Janice Cameron found that between 50 and 80 per cent of patients in the community with venous leg ulcers were affected by the very products which were being used as treatments. In addition, research papers on the issue only appeared in medical journals and, therefore, were unlikely to be read by nurses who, after all, make the decisions about how leg ulcers should be managed.
