Aims and intended learning outcomes

The aim of this article is to refresh your knowledge of the structure and functions of the skin and to provide an overview of management of psoriasis. Treatment options within the primary care setting will be discussed to enable you to consider the appropriate treatment options for the condition and specifically for individual patients. The importance of the educative and supportive roles a nurse can provide will also be highlighted. After reading the article you should be able to:

Identify the main structures in the skin

Name five functions of the skin

Name and recognise the different types of psoriasis

Provide education regarding emollient therapy

Provide education regarding active treatment

Summarise the implications of chronic skin conditions on the patient’s quality of life
