Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common condition which has an impact on primary and secondary healthcare services. As more acutely ill patients are now being managed by the primary healthcare team, an in depth knowledge of the aetiology, prevention and management of VTE is essential. A detailed review of the signs and symptoms of VTE, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment options is provided in this article.
