Supporting effective lifestyle behaviour change interventions

Candia Allen Health improvement principal, Office of the Director of Public Health, Leeds City Council, Leeds

Improving the health of the population, and morbidity and mortality associated with non-communicable diseases, is a national priority. Health education and promotion should focus on avoiding harmful behaviours such as excessive alcohol intake, smoking and poor diet. It is argued that each patient contact should involve health promotion and that healthcare professionals should be encouraged to discuss and support effective lifestyle behaviour change interventions.
