Strategies to reduce alcohol misuse in primary care

Pamela Truman Operational support nurse, South Birmingham Primary Care Trust, Birmingham

This article discusses the problems associated with alcohol misuse, including increased mortality and morbidity. It identifies the population groups most at risk and suggests that health improvement planning and a high-profile promotion campaign are required to raise public awareness and initiate appropriate interventions. Nurses in primary care are well placed to develop, implement and evaluate alcohol misuse reduction strategies.
