Introduction to the pain series

Felicia Cox Senior nurse in pain management, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, London, The Royal College of Nursing London Pain Interest Group

PAIN IS A COMPLEX phenomenon. What we experience as pain is the result of an intricate series of events in our body and brain, reflecting previous physical and emotional experiences of pain coupled with genetics, gender and culture. It is a subjective experience relying on patient self-report. It cannot be measured objectively.
