Aim and intended learning outcomesThe aim of this article is to review the role of the nurse in the immunisation of adults. After reading this article the nurse should be able to:

Understand the concepts of active and passive immunity and their relevance to immunisation practice

List the common diseases against which adults may be immunised, and the indications for immunisation

Describe the conditions under which a nurse can carry out immunisation as a delegated task
