One London trust’s concerted efforts to achieve race equality have released the leadership talents of staff from BME backgrounds. But success has thrown up some surprising challenges – and there is always room to improve

In August 2016, East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) became the first in the country to have a black and minority ethnic (BME) chief executive and chair, both of whom are women.
