Monkeypox is a rare disease related to smallpox that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. The virus was first identified in monkeys in 1958, with the first human case in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, the infection has been reported in a number of central and western African countries, and can be spread by animals such as rodents including rats, mice and squirrels.
