Caregivers who work with people with learning disabilities have to deal with violent behaviour as part of their role. For some, however, the stress arising from these experiences can lead to burnout. Mats Lundström and colleagues investigated the experiences of caregivers working in Sweden with the aim of developing strategies to help carers manage violence and improve their working lives
A high frequency of exposure to violence has been described among caregivers working in services for people with learning disability. A recent study (Strand et al 2004) found that 61 per cent of caregivers in a Swedish service said they had been exposed to violence during the previous year.
