Health care on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean

Elizabeth Perkins Research assistant professor and health co-ordinator, Florida Center for Inclusive Communities, University of South Florida. Dr Perkins, Editorial board of Learning Disability Practice

Elizabeth Perkins reflects on her experiences of study and work, and the role of learning disability nurses, in the UK and the United States

This article compares the experiences of certified developmental disability nurses in the United States with those of registered nurses in learning disabilities, their nearest professional equivalents, in the UK. There are far fewer such nurses in the US, even though the country’s population is six times larger than that of the UK, yet both groups of professionals face similar struggles for recognition.
