In May 2011 BBC Panorama aired its exposé of poor care at the Winterbourne View hospital near Bristol. The undercover filming at the inpatient unit sent shockwaves across the sector and wider society. It revealed a regime of physical and psychological abuse, neglect, and mistreatment, prompting prosecutions of the staff involved.
