Tumour of the appendix: pseudomyxoma peritonei

Gary Witham Clinical nurse specialist pseudomyxoma peritonei, Christie Hospital NHS Trust, Manchester
John Costello Lecturer in nursing, University of Manchester, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, Manchester

This paper describes the experiences of a patient with pseudomyxoma peritonei, a rare tumour arising from the appendix, which has fatal consequences unless treated. Using case study design, the paper outlines the medical condition by a patient narrative. The role of the specialist nurse in active listening and therapeutic healing is described.
