Smoking cessation advice for head and neck cancer patients: is it worth it?

Kristine Ann Webb Smoking cessation adviser, Stop Smoking Services, East Lancashire Primary Care Trust, Accrington Victoria Community Hospital, Lancashire

This article describes the incidence of head and neck cancer in England and the health professional’s role in helping patients with this diagnosis to consider stopping smoking. It identifies how offering staff training in brief interventions strategies had an impact on smoking cessation in head and neck cancer patients in one NHS trust. The influence of a dedicated, qualified specialist nurse adviser is considered. Conclusions are drawn on the effectiveness of the approach together with recommendations for future research.
