Colorectal cancer — development of a nurse led follow-up clinic

Kelly Taylor Macmillan Colorectal Nurse Specialist, Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham, Kent

Patient follow up after curative treatment for colorectal cancer is a subject of continued debate. It is criticised as costly with little evidence to support survival benefits. The focus of follow up is therefore not solely based upon recurrence detection, greater emphasis is increasingly being placed upon the psychosocial support that patients gain. An increasing number of colorectal nurse specialists are running follow up clinics based upon a patient centred supportive model. This article presents an overview of how this approach to follow up has been implemented and evaluated in one hospital and focuses on the practicalities of establishing a nurse led follow-up clinic.
