The increased need for a system of assessment, intervention and care that is not based on in-person visits is being recognised. Assessing and advising patients over the phone is one such system. With the use of established protocols for assessment and treatment, nurses can successfully manage many patient needs by telephone. This article presents an audit of a chemotherapy telephone service and outlines the need for a specialised chemotherapy triage nurse to maximise this service.
