In football stadiums, supporters wearing one colour are physically separated from supporters in another colour. Woe betide the lost soul who finds him or herself in opposition territory! The belief ‘our side is better than yours’ inspires supporters, but that rivalry leads to jealousy, anger, aggression and sometimes violence. If our team is in the premiership, we can look down on other teams and their supporters, and chant: ‘We’re better than you.’ We love to see rival teams fail, and point out that failure to their supporters. We love it even more when high powered, top of the league teams stumble.
