Listening to the patient’s story has always been a central part of nursing care. When we take a history, we are taught to attend to every aspect of the patient’s communication, using all our senses to ‘hear’ what we are being told, both verbally and non-verbally. As patients share their story, so we learn about the patient and often about ourselves; self-awareness playing an important role in personal professional development.
